Three things, in order. One: can they explain a tradeoff without flinching? Two: do they reach for the boring solution first? Three: when something broke, do they tell you what they actually did, or what the postmortem said they did?
Pattern-matching to titles or company names is a shortcut that works exactly often enough to be dangerous.
